    About This Lot

Andy Warhol's Turtle is a striking portrait of a sea turtle represented in a distinctive palette of purples, pinks and blues. The use of these unnatural colors to depict this natural scene hinders the viewers ability to instantly recognize the subject. Based on a photograph, Warhol used his distinctive screenprinting method to create this mesmerizing image through his use of graphic outlines and his commercial aesthetic. While Warhol was certainly passionate about the preservation of wildlife as is demonstrated by his earlier Endangered Species series from 1983, Turtle was conceived as promotional material for the film Turtle Diary. Written by Harold Pinter, this 1985 film was a romantic comedy that follows a couple who find love after meeting at the sea turtle exhibit at the London Zoo and together decide to release the turtles from captivity.
