Serge Attukwei Clottey was selected to be featured in the Africa Present: INVEST section
Ghanian artist Serge Attukwei Clottey works across various media including installation, photography, performance, and sculpture. The artist coined the moniker Afrogallonism for his artistic practice of repurposing yellow oil containers that are used as water vessels by Ghanians. The foreign containers he employs examine the relationship between material culture and the possibilities of a post-colonial world. Born in 1985 in Accra, Clottey received his education at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design in Accra. He notably spent time in Brazil where he attended the Guignard University of Art in Minas Gerais. He returned to Ghana and in 2003 he had his first exhibition Different Strokes at the Loom African Gallery in Accra. The artist has achieved great acclaim for his public projects, and in 2018 was commissioned to create a large-scale installation titled Kusum Gboo Ga (Tradition Never Dies) for the headquarters of Facebook. In 2019, the artist received an honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Brighton. Recent exhibitions of his work include Solo Chorus at the Mistake Room in Los Angeles, Current Affairs at Fabrica Gallery in Brighton in the United Kingdom in 2019, and Sensitive Balance at the GNYP Gallery in Berlin in 2020.The artist currently lives and works between Accra and Los Angeles.
