About This Lot
Wole Lagunju was selected to be featured in the Africa Present: SUPPORT section
Wole Lagunju is a contemporary artist of the African diaspora whose paintings are often associated with Onaism, the aesthetic fusion of traditional Yoruba textile design with the motifs of modern art. His work is centered on a critique of cultural idioms that have emerged from colonialism. Born in 1966 in Osogbo in Nigeria, Lagunju grew up surrounded by the artistic legacy of the West African town, studying under the artist Jacob Afolabi. He studied graphic design at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife in Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986. Afterwards, he worked as an illustrator for the Daily Times in Nigeria and for various advertising agencies, before beginning his career as an artist in the late 1990’s. In 2006, the artist was given a Philip Ravenhill Fellowship from the University of California at Los Angeles, just before he moved to the United States in 2007. In 2009, he received an award from the Pollock Krasner Foundation. The artist’s work has been included in exhibitions at international institutions, such as New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham in the United Kingdom, the Denver Art Museum in Colorado, Via Mundi Gallery in Atlanta, and Signature Art Gallery in Lagos in Nigeria, among others. The artist currently lives and works in the United States.
