About This Lot
Shara Hughes is a contemporary American artist known for her colorful invented landscapes. Employing varied marks, Hughes loosely depicts floating moons, gnarled trees, and blazing sunlight. As in the paintings of David Hockney and Charles Burchfield, Hughes’ works defy conventional depictions of space and light. The imaginative nature of her flower paintings differ markedly from the artists Georgia O’Keefe and Vincent Van Gogh, who drew inspiration from real life sources. In the present lot, Split Ends, Hughes applies her vibrant and surrealistic sensibilities to subvert the history of the genre and emphasize the suspension of our lived environment in constant states of change.
Born in 1981 in Atlanta, Hughes received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. She went on to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011 and in 2017, the artist was included in the Whitney Biennial. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Denver Art Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., among others. The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
