Zackarais Martin Aagaard
(Norwegian, 1863–1913)
Biography
Zackarais Martin Aagaard was a Norwegian painter best known for his naturalistic depictions of ships at sea, harbors, and marine landscapes. Aagard’s works are distinctly poetic, and his background as a sailor allowed him to make precise descriptions of the weight and bearing of the ships buoyed upon the waves. Born on October 13, 1863 in Levanger, Norway, he went on to study at the Trondheim Technical School and the Royal Drawing School in Oslo, as well as studying under the Norwegian painter Christian Krohg. Aagaard exhibited at the Exposition Universelle 1900 in Paris, France, and today his works are held in the collections of several museum in his home country, including the Bergen Maritime Museum, the Trondheim Museum, and the Nordmøre Museum, among others. Aagaard died in 1913 in Norway.
