Matthias Weischer
(German, born 1973)
Biography
Matthias Weischer is a contemporary German painter known for his lush depictions of stage-like rooms and environments. His painting Egyptian Room (2001), distorts the boundary between inside and outside in a manner reminiscent of M.C. Escher. “My paintings are made of mistakes, there are many layers in each painting, many pictures are built up to produce one final picture,” he has explained. Born in 1973 in Elte, Germany, he studied painting at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Weischer became a part of what is known as the New Leipzig School during the early 2000s, along with the older artist Neo Rauch and Tilo Baumgärten. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, and the Museum der Bildende Künste in Leipzig, among others.
