Sidney Nolan

Sidney Nolan was an Australian artist known for his Surreal and expressive paintings. In addition to landscapes, Nolan often focused on Australian history, depicting legendary characters, particularly the Robin Hood-like outlaw Ned Kelly. The artist’s style is characterized by its fluid paint handling atop slick surfaces like Masonite and glass. “Painting is an extension of man's means of communication,” the artist said. “As such, it's pure, difficult, and wonderful.” Born on April 22, 1917 in Carlton, Australia, Nolan received his formal training at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in Melbourne.
