    About This Lot

Born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, in 1973, Tomás Saraceno is most interested in the convergence of technology, art and biodiversity. Saraceno studied at the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires in Argentina where he received a degree in Architecture. Later studying at the Escuela Superior de bellas Artes de la Nación Ernesto de la Carcova in Buenos Aires, Argentina and the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule-Frankfurt am Main in Frankfurt, Germany, the artist refined his ability to create sculptural environments and installations reminiscent of spider webs. Fascinated by arachnids, Saraceno founded the Arachnophilia, an interdisciplinary research community that combines the artist’s interest in science with his artistic practice. Saraceno’s work in art and science seeks to understand the delicate balance between the natural and unnatural words of the Capitalocene era. Knowledge driven, Saraceno’s oeuvre weaves a dialogue of vibrations, constantly re-forming and re-capitulating his understanding of life’s web. The artist lives and works in Germany, from his Frankfurt am Main studio established in 2005. Saraceno has been recipient of numerous awards and residencies, most notably from the Atelier Calder in 2010 and the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology from 2012 until present. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions and is collected by museums and institutions internationally, including the Museo de Arte Moderno, Buenos Aires in Argentina, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dusseldorf among others.

Saraceno’s work is currently on view at The Shed in New York in the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Particular Matter(s) from February 11-April 17, 2022.
